ChordCam privacy policy
ChordCam ("the app") lets you film a cover of a song with its lyrics and chords scrolling on screen, then export a video with them on it. It is made by flamedots, an independent studio run by one person. It works without an account, and your videos stay on your phone. The free version shows ads and marks exported videos "Made with ChordCam"; ChordCam Pro, a one-time purchase, removes both.
In short
- No account, no sign-in. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your songs, takes and videos stay on your device. No picture or sound is ever sent to us or to anyone else by the app.
- A video leaves your phone only when you share it or save it to Photos yourself.
- The app sends anonymous usage data to Google Analytics, which you can turn off in Settings.
- Without Pro, Google AdMob shows ads and collects data to do so. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland you are asked first.
Camera and microphone
The app asks for the camera and the microphone when you record a take. It films you and records the sound of your cover; in rehearsal mode nothing is recorded. While you film, the app reads the brightness of the camera picture on the phone to pick a readable colour for the lyrics; nothing of the picture is kept or sent for that. The lyrics shown while you film are not part of the recording.
What stays on your phone
Your songs (title, lyrics and chords, key, capo and tempo), your takes with their timing and thumbnails, your exported videos and your settings are stored on your device only. When you discard a take, it is deleted. The app does not upload any of it.
Your phone's own backup (Android backup to your Google account, iCloud or device backup on iPhone) may include the app's data, under your account's settings. We have no access to it.
Sharing and saving to Photos
When you tap Share, the app opens your phone's share sheet with the video, and you choose where it goes; what happens there is up to you and the app you pick. When you tap Save to Photos, the app asks to add the video to your photo library. It only adds to it; it never reads your photos.
Notifications
The app asks whether it may show notifications. It includes Firebase Cloud Messaging, which gives this installation a token so it can receive a notification; we do not store that token, and the app does not send notifications of its own. You can turn notifications off in your phone's settings.
Anonymous usage data (Google Analytics for Firebase)
To learn which parts of the app are used, the app sends Google Analytics the screens you open and a few events, such as finishing the introduction and steps in the Pro offer (opening it, buying, watching a rewarded ad). Each comes with the app version, device model and operating system, language, an approximate location (country) from your IP address, and an identifier for this installation.
It never includes your songs, lyrics, videos, your picture or your voice. On Android the app turns off the advertising ID and ad personalisation signals for Analytics. Usage data is on by default; turn it off at any time in Settings, "Share anonymous usage data", and the app stops sending it. See firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
Settings fetched from Google (Firebase Remote Config)
When it starts and when you come back to it, the app asks Firebase Remote Config for a few settings: the oldest version still supported, a maintenance notice, and what the free version includes. This sends Google the app version, the operating system and the installation identifier. It does not depend on the usage data switch.
Ads (Google AdMob)
Without Pro, the app shows a banner ad on the Videos and Settings tabs, never on Songs or while you film. You can also choose to watch a rewarded ad to use Pro for a limited time.
To choose and show an ad, measure it and prevent fraud, Google AdMob collects your device's advertising ID, your IP address (and from it an approximate location), information about the device and the app, and how you interact with the ad. Google may use it to personalise ads, as described at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland the app asks for your consent through Google's consent message before any ad loads, and you can change your answer in Settings, "Ad privacy choices". Anywhere, you can reset your advertising ID or opt out of personalised ads in your phone's settings. Buying Pro removes the ads.
Purchases (Google Play, App Store and RevenueCat)
ChordCam Pro is a one-time purchase made through Google Play or the App Store, which handle the payment; we never see your card or payment details. The app uses RevenueCat to check purchases, restore them on a new phone and grant Pro after a rewarded ad.
RevenueCat receives an anonymous ID it creates for this installation, the purchase (product, time, price) and its store receipt, the app version and operating system, and, through its AdMob adapter, ad events (an ad loaded, shown or tapped, and its revenue) and the ID of a rewarded ad you watched. It receives no name or email address. See revenuecat.com/privacy.
Permissions the app lists but does not use
ChordCam is built on the same base as our music apps, and its install still lists Bluetooth (and, on Android 11 and older, the location access Android ties to Bluetooth scanning) for a MIDI keyboard feature it does not have. The app does not use them. If a later version does, it will ask first and this page will say so.
Who receives data
| Service | What for | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics, Remote Config, Cloud Messaging (Firebase) | Usage data, app settings, notifications | firebase.google.com/support/privacy |
| Google AdMob | Ads in the free version | policies.google.com/privacy |
| RevenueCat | Purchases and rewarded Pro | revenuecat.com/privacy |
| Google Play, Apple App Store | Payment | Their own policies |
We do not sell your data, and we do not receive any of the above in a form that identifies you.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Your choices and deleting data
- Delete any take or exported video in the app. Uninstalling deletes everything it stored on the phone; save the videos you want to keep to Photos first.
- Videos you shared or saved to Photos are outside the app; delete them where they are.
- Turn off usage data in Settings. Change ad consent in Settings, "Ad privacy choices" (where offered), or in your phone's ad settings.
- Data already sent is held by Google and RevenueCat under their policies. Because the app has no account, we cannot link it to you; if you want help with a request to them, write to us.
Changes
ChordCam is still being built. When it changes what it collects, this page changes with it and gets a new date above.
